Licenses Help

Becoming an insurance agent offers independence, flexibility, and purpose.

Agents can build their own business, earn based on their success, and make a real difference by helping others protect what matters most in a stable, essential industry.

Where do I get started?

You have already landed on a great resource for information and support as you navigate this new chapter in your career.

We recommend reviewing our class schedule for a session that works with your schedule. VAIA & IIAV offers both live pre-licensing classes and self-study options for you to get the knowledge you need to pass the Virginia state insurance exams for Life, Health & Annuities, and/or Property & Casualty. You can view the entire course calendar HERE!

Upon completion of a pre-licensing course with the IIAV and successful passing of a license exam and fingerprint check, NEW agents will be eligible for a FREE resume listing on our Industry Career Board!

Where can I find licensing and fingerprint information?

The State Corporation Commission’s (SCC) Bureau of Insurance (Bureau) is responsible for the licensing of all Virginia agents.

Exams: Prometric is the administrator for all insurance licensing exams. Exams can be taken either online with ProProctor or at Prometric Test Centers throughout Virginia. You can call Prometric at 1-866-891-6396 or go to www.prometric.com/virginia/insurance to schedule your exam.

Fingerprints: Fingerprinting is required for individuals living in Virginia who are interested in becoming licensed insurance agents in the Commonwealth. The State Corporation Commission’s (SCC) Bureau of Insurance (Bureau) has contracted with Fieldprint, which provides a complete electronic fingerprinting process from collection through transmission to the FBI. The IIAV does NOT offer fingerprint or background checks.

For questions, contact the Bureau of Insurance Agent Licensing Section at AgentLicensing@scc.virginia.gov or call 804-371-9631 or visit the SCC website.

If your email is correct with the BOI, you should receive an email 90 days before the expiration of your agent license stating you can now pay your renewal fee. Please keep in mind, your renewal fee can not be paid prior to 90 days before expiration.
