Agency Start-Up Checklist


Qualifications to Becoming a P&C or L&H Insurance Agent in Virginia

  1. You must be at least 18 years of age
  2. You must be a legal resident of Virginia
  3. Satisfy the Virginia Bureau that you are of good character and have a good reputation for honesty (including submitting a current background check)
  4. Pass the appropriate license exam or hold the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation for Property and Casualty license or hold the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation.

If you have moved to Virginia from another state and were licensed as an agent in that state it is important to note that you have 90 days to transfer your license and avoid taking the Virginia state exam. After 90 days you will need to sit for the Virginia exam. You will be required to obtain a criminal background check from your previous state.
